Newbury Church Serves Hungry Families

Small villages like Newbury were once major produces of agricultural products. As family farms across America have fallen on hard times, communities such as Newbury have begun to feel the economic squeeze. Several months ago the Newbury Bible Church felt led to take some practical steps to help meet the needs of economically distressed families in their community. The church began a food pantry. At first, only one or two families requested help, but now 8-10 families a week come for much needed assistance. The church provides the volunteers for the food pantry and is able to show the love of Christ in a real way while they pass out food. The community at large helps provide donations of both food and money to keep the pantry stocked. The church also gave out turkey baskets to needy familes at both Thanksgiving and Christmas. The baskets included everything a family would need for a full Thanksgivign and Christmas dinner. At Christmas, the children in needy families were also given a small gift with the turkey basket. Pastor David Lee reports, "Newbury is the most spiritual congregation we have ever served and yet they desire to go deeper in the Word as they trust in Christ alone. They have really gotten behind the food pantry ministry and it is making a difference in the community."
